September 2011 - March 2012 Programs

September 2011, Keep America Beautiful (KAB), Topeka/Shawnee County & "The Story of Stuff"

Philicia McKee is Executive Director of Keep America Beautiful (KAB)-Topeka/Shawnee County. She will explain how KAB promotes litter reduction, recycling and beautification through education, business partnerships, and community involvement. We will also watch a 20 minute film titled “The Story of Stuff”.
The Story of Stuff: From its extraction through sale, use and disposal, all the stuff in our lives affects communities at home and abroad, yet most of this is hidden from view. The Story of Stuff is a 20-minute, fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns. The Story of Stuff exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues, and calls us together to create a more sustainable and just world. It'll teach you something, it'll make you laugh, and it just may change the way you look at all the stuff in your life forever. http://storyofstuff.org

October 2011, The History of Nesting Bald Eagles in Kansas

Michael Watkins ia a Wildlife Biologist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Kansas City.  He has been working with nesting bald eagles in Kansas since 1989 when the first productive nest in the state since the turn of the century was discovered at Clinton Lake. His program, "The History of Nesting Bald Eagles in Kansas" will chronicle this first nest and the expansion of the eagle nesting population through 2011.

November 2011, Owls of Kansas

Chuck Otte is the Geary County Extension Agent for K-State Research and Extension. He will be presenting “Owls of Kansas”. Owls are fascinating birds, yet because they are most active when most of us are in bed asleep, they often aren´t well understood. Chuck will help you get to know a little bit more about the denizens of the Kansas night.

January 2012, Riverkeepers Mapping Project

Laura Caldwell is the Kansas Riverkeeper for the Friends of the Kaw. River. She will explain online mapping of the Kansas River.

February 2012, Bees, Butterflies, and Birds

Jeff Hansen is a self employed native plant consultant. He will explain the importance of using native plants in our landscapes. Plants are near the bottom of the food chain and support our insects, which in turn become food for birds. Nesting birds almost exclusively feed insects to their young. Migratory songbirds also are dependent on insects to fuel them during migration. Many of the various insect species use specific plants as food, especially butterfly & moth larva. Without the necessary species of the plants, the insects suffer, which in turn affects birds. Learn the trees, shrubs, and other plant species needed by our native insects that in turn become protein for our birds. There will be a special focus on butterflies. A slide show of various plants, insects, and birds will be presented.

March 2012, Ghost Bird

Watch the movie "Ghost Bird". Ghost Bird is a feature documentary exploring the rediscovery of the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker.
